If you’re feeling as though you may have indulged a little too much over the holidays, don’t feel guilty. Holidays are the time to enjoy cookies, cakes, pies, and baked goods galore without stressing about the consequences. We look forward to the holidays all year long, and to not partake in festive foods would be a crime!
That being said, what we enjoy over the holidays isn’t the most healthy food to continue eating regularly. Balance is key, and the start of 2017 is the perfect time to reset our palettes and practice healthy habits. This kale and banana smoothie makes a delicious on-the-go breakfast, and the perfect reset for the new year.
Smoothies are a great way to incorporate lots of nutrients into one meal. While it’s great to have healthy goals, it’s equally important to be realistic. Those with busy schedules have to recognize it’s not always feasible to sit down for nutrient-dense meals three times a day. We can make sustainable, long-term changes only when we’re honest with what does and doesn’t work with our lifestyles. Smoothies allow you to combine proteins, fruits and vegetables all in one serving (and sometimes, without even realizing it!) making it a great option for those constantly on-the-go.
If you’re not a fan of kale, rest assured that it’s taste won’t dominate this recipe. The banana and maple syrup sweeten the smoothie, which lets you sneak your veggies in for those who maybe wouldn’t embrace kale otherwise. In addition, if you won’t have time to eat for a while, throw a scoop of peanut butter or protein powder into the recipe. The protein will help keep you full for longer, and give you energy for whatever tasks your day has in store!
